A Review of Advances in Fatigue and Life Prediction of Fiber-reinforced Composites

Abstract
This contribution is an attempt to provide a thorough review of past and current research work on fatigue and life
prediction of fiber-reinforced composites. In order to summarize and present a comprehensive overview of the current
state-of-the-art published works, the reviews in this contribution are broadly summarized into four groups of review;
(1) fatigue of fiber-reinforced composites, (2) composite damage mechanism, (3) composite failure criteria and, (4) composite fatigue modeling and life prediction. The review will begin with a discussion of inherent and environmental factors
affecting the fatigue of composites. This is followed by a rather extensive description of the composite damage mechanism and a summary of commonly used failure criteria for life prediction. And towards the end, models and methods for
fatigue and life prediction of composites are summarized and discussed.
Concluding remarks
Thorough reviews of the past and current research
work on the fatigue and life prediction of fiber-reinforced composites were carried out and discussed in
this contribution. The factors affecting fatigue
response and damage mechanism of fiber-reinforced
composites subjected to cyclic loads were presented
and discussed in some details. The use of accelerated
testing methodology to allow for environmental
effects on the life prediction of composites was also
presented and discussed with deliberations. In-depth
reviews of the available failure criteria for fiber-reinforced composites were also included.
Progressive fatigue model is perhaps the most
sophisticated model to date compared to the fatigue
life model and the phenomenological model. Coupled
with the sophistication of the model are the complexity and economic challenges. Fatigue life model is
much simpler and easier to apply, as the model can
predict up to the first point of failure without the
details of stiffness degradation before failure.
The current knowledge on fatigue response and life
prediction of fiber-reinforced composites is still not
yet matured and there are still a lot more work that
needs to be done. This is especially true in the development of a failure criterion (or a suite of failure
criteria) that is capable of predicting failure for all
type of fiber-reinforced composite structures and for
all type of loading conditions. There is also a need for
a progressive fatigue model that is much simpler, inexpensive computationally and demanding only basic
material testing. Current state-of-the-art work on
damage modeling appears to gaining momentum
and there are signs that future research work is progressing towards a more sophisticated progressive
damage model coupled with mode-dependent failure
criterion for a more complete prediction of failure
modes and the progression of failure of composites
subject to static and fatigue loads.
