This is a list of automotive technical terms in English
and Spanish. Many of the terms listed are used in the
ASE test specifications, task lists, and test questions.
This glossary is intended to be used when preparing
for and taking the ASE tests. The Spanish translations
are provided to help technicians and reader/translators
properly interpret the English technical terms.
ASE Policy On Use of the ASE Glossary and Foreign Languages
Dictionaries During The Test
A test taker (or a reader/translator assisting a test
taker) may use a published version of the ASE Glossary
of Automotive Terminology, or another standard
published English/foreign language dictionary.
Textbooks, study guides, and service manuals are
not allowed. In addition, photocopied, hand-written,
unbound, or electronic glossaries or dictionaries are
not allowed. This includes any and all copies of the ASE
Glossaries that have been downloaded and printed
locally.
Test takers who wish to use a glossary or dictionary
must purchase it in advance, and bring it with them
to the test center. However, the glossary or dictionary
will be inspected before and after the test for notes
or inserted pages. Test takers should not write in the
glossary or dictionary either before or during the test.

If you plan to use this glossary when taking
ASE tests, do not write in it before or during the test.
The test center supervisor will inspect the glossary
before and after the test. A glossary which has been
written in may not be used in the test center. A
glossary which is written in during the test will be
confiscated by the test center supervisor. ASE reserves
the right to cancel any test score, bar participation in
the ASE program, or revoke certification if ASE/ACT
has any reason to question the validity of a test score,
or suspect misconduct at the test center.

Esta es una lista de términos técnicos automotrices en inglés
y en español. Muchos de estos términos se encuentran en las
especificaciones de los exámenes, en las listas de labores y
en los exámenes de ASE. Este glosario ha sido diseñado para
ser utilizado durante la preparación al igual que al tomar
los exámenes de certificación de ASE. Las traducciones al
español de términos técnicos están diseñadas para ayudar a
los técnicos y/o a los lectores/traductores en la interpretación
correcta de los términos en su lengua original: el inglés.
Normas de ASE para el Uso del Glosario de ASE y Diccionarios de
Lenguas Extranjeras Durante los Exámenes
Una persona tomando el examen (o un lector/traductor
que ayude a quien esté tomando un examen) puede utilizar
una versión publicada del Glosario de ASE de Terminología
Automotríz u otro diccionario de una lengua extranjera/
Inglés publicado y estandarizado. No se permiten textos,
guías de estudio, ni manuales de servicio. Adicionalmente no
se permiten glosarios ni diccionarios fotocopiados, escritos
a mano, no encuadernados ó electrónicos. Esta prohibición
se extiende a ejemplares impresos localmente de la versión
electrónica de los Glosarios de ASE.
Las personas que deseen utilizar un glosario ó diccionario
deben obtenerlos anticipadamente, trayéndolos consigo
al centro de exámenes. Aun así, el glosario y/o diccionario
serán inspeccionados antes y después de los exámenes para
verificar si tienen notas ó páginas adicionales. Las personas
que tomen los exámenes no deben escribir en los glosarios

Directions To Users Of The ASE Glossary
This ASE Glossary of Automotive Terminology is hereby
released into the public domain and can be used
free of charge. ASE requests that where substantial
portions of these works are incorporated into the
user’s materials, the National Institute for Automotive
Service Excellence (ASE) be given source credit.
ASE considers these works to be “works-in-progress”
and expects to release updated versions of the
glossary from time to time. Additionally, other formats
of these documents may be released in the future.
Users are advised to check with ASE periodically for
additional releases and updates.
Given that the process of translation is not an exact
science, and the Spanish was developed in the context
of specific undisclosed ASE test questions, the user of
these materials must exercise appropriate judgment
and linguistic expertise when using the glossary as a
resource.
General Terminology
In addition to names of automotive parts and systems
(nouns), the glossary also includes many verbs and
modifiers within the context of typical use in ASE test
questions. As with English words, their meaning may
not be limited to what’s presented in the glossary.
Terms that were considered fundamental and
universal (e.g. numbers, colors, common verbs, articles,
etc.) were not normally included in the glossary.

Employment and Training Administration.

Este glosario de Terminología Automotriz de ASE se

Terminología General
En adición a los nombres de partes automotrices y de los
sistemas (sustantivos), el glosario también incluye muchos
verbos y modificadores dentro del contexto utilizado
típicamente en las preguntas de los exámenes de ASE. Al
igual que con las palabras en inglés, el significado no está
limitado por el material presentado en el glosario. Los
términos considerados como fundamentales y universales
(Por ejemplo: números, colores, verbos comunes, artículos
etc.), normalmente no fueron incluidos en el glosario.

ASE’s certification program was designed with the
needs of working automobile technicians in mind.
How does the program work?
Each year in May and November, ASE offers all of the
repair and service professional certification tests in
over 700 locations.
You may sign up to take one or several exams. If you
pass at lest one test and have two-years of hands-on
work experience or the educational equivalent, you
earn ASE certification.
Test results are mailed directly to you. You will receive
a score report, listing your total score as well as the
number of correct answers in each content area.
Once you are in the program, ASE offers a recertification
track—your assurance that the Blue Seal of Excellence
remains a meaningful symbol of your professionalism
for years to come.
What are the benefits?
The benefits are both personal and professional:

• Once certified, you will receive an ASE shoulder
insignia, a wallet I.D. card, and a wall certificate,
suitable for framing. ASE also offers mugs, caps, and
other recognition items at modest prices.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT ASE’S BILINGUAL TESTING
Which ASE certification tests are being offered?
Four Automobile / Light Truck tests are being offered
in a parallel, English-Spanish format. Those tests are
A1 –Engine Repair, A4 – Suspension and Steering,
A5 – Brakes, and A6 – Electrical / Electronic Systems.
However, only the regular certification tests are being
offered in this format; no recertification tests are
available in bilingual form.
Why are only four ASE tests being offered in
this bilingual format?
These certification specialty areas were chosen
because they are historically the most frequently
attempted by first-time test takers. These areas
represent those in which first-time test takers most
often work in their jobs, day-to-day. And, these are the
certification specialty areas most in demand among
employers. In other words, technicians are most likely
to begin a certification path with one of these test
titles, to get a “feel” for ASE testing and to overcome
the anxiety of taking a written test. They are, in effect,
the “gateway” to certification for many technicians.
Are Spanish-language support materials (collateral) available, in
addition to the ASE test questions?
As a service, ASE provides The Official ASE Catalog of
Tests, useful in reviewing and preparing to take the
certification test at no charge, upon request. For these
four tests (A1 – Engine Repair, A4 – Suspension and
Steering, A5 – Brakes, and A6 – Electrical / Electronic
Systems) the Test Specifications and Task Lists are
available on the Spanish-language section of the
ASE website (www.ase.com) for review or download.
Several of the independent publishers of ASE
preparation materials have Spanish versions of their
guides, also.
You may also find the Spanish Language Training
Resources under the Test Preparation section of
our website. This listing includes companies that
independently offer bilingual or Spanish training
materials.

PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES SOBRE LOS EXÁMENES BILINGÜES DE ASE

otras palabras: cuando un técnico empieza a obtener sus

de estos títulos, para obtener una idea de cómo son los
exámenes y para superar la ansiedad de tomar un examen
escrito. Efectivamente, para muchos técnicos, estos son, “la

¿Existe material de apoyo en español disponible fuera de
las preguntas de los exámenes en español?
Como un servicio completamente gratuito, ASE provee el
Catálogo Oficial de los Exámenes (The Official ASE Catalog
of Tests) de gran uso para repasar y prepararse para tomar
los exámenes. Para estos cuatro exámenes: A1 - Reparación
de Motor, A4 - Suspensión y Dirección, A5 - Frenos, y A6 -
Sistemas Eléctricos y Electrónicos las Especificaciones de los

Where are the bilingual ASE tests available?
All the ASE test titles available in this parallel
English-Spanish format are available at each of the
approximately 700 test centers throughout the United
States, its Territories, Canada and Puerto Rico.
How do I register for ASE bilingual tests?
There are no special registration procedures or
requirements for bilingual tests. You can request
registration materials several ways. If you are already
ASE-certified, you should receive ASE Registration
Booklets via mail on a regular basis. You can also visit
the ASE website at www.ase.com and download
a registration form there. To request a free booklet
by mail, use the Information Request Form on our
website, or call (703) 669-6600 ext 400. You can also
request a faxed registration form via the ASE FaxBack
System, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Just call
1-877-273-8324 and select Option 7. The registration
form comes with its own instructions.

ASE Glossary of Automotive Terminology
May I register for any of the tests available in the parallel
English-Spanish format as well as tests available only in English?
Yes. If you register for any of the tests available in the
parallel English-Spanish format your will automatically
receive the bilingual version of the test at the Test
Center. There are no special registration requirements
or fees. You will receive an English-only test booklet
for any other ASE test for which you registered.
I have difficulty reading Spanish. May I use a reader for
these bilingual tests?
Yes. If you have difficulty reading, not related to a
disability, or if English is your second language, a reader
or translator may assist you with the ASE tests, even
if the test is available in the parallel English-Spanish
format. You must apply to use a reader/translator
when you register for the tests and all applications
are subject to approval. You are also responsible for
providing the reader or translator. Also, be aware
that the deadline for registrations including Reader/
Translator applications is a week earlier than the
regular registration deadline. For more information

www.ase.com or request a Registration Booklet.
Why is the Department of Labor funding translation of
ASE test questions into Spanish?
The Department of Labor conducted an Automotive
Industry Executive Forum recently and identified,
among other things, that in the area of recruiting
and retaining employees, there is a need to 1)
develop a more diverse workforce, 2) recognize
and accommodate English as a second language in
developing employees, and 3) provide means for
retraining and upgrading skill sets among workers in
this industry.
ASE certification is the only independent, nationally
recognized and accepted technician credential that
is endorsed and accepted by virtually every segment
of the automotive service industry. In addition,
vehicle owners have come to recognize and trust
ASE certification as a symbol of a repairing facility’s
commitment to high standards and quality service.
Considering the impact of Spanish-speaking
technicians currently working in the automotive
service industry, and the expected growth of Spanishspeaking technicians over the next 10 years, translating
ASE questions into Spanish, in order to improve access
for professional development of this segment of the
workforce, substantially meets the objectives of DOL’s
High Growth Training Initiative for this industry.
¿Me puedo inscribir para cualquiera de los exámenes ofrecidos en
formato paralelo inglés-español al igual que para
exámenes solamente ofrecidos en Inglés?
Sí. Si usted se inscribe para cualquiera de los exámenes
ofrecidos en el formato paralelo inglés-español, usted
automáticamente recibirá la versión bilingüe en el centro de
exámenes. No existen requisitos ni costos especiales. Usted

¿Porqué está prestando ayuda el Departamento del Trabajo con la
traducción de las preguntas de los exámenes del ASE al Español?
El Departamento del Trabajo presidió un Foro Ejecutivo
de la Industria Automotriz e identificó, entre otras cosas,
que en el área de reclutamiento y retención de empleados
existe la necesidad de 1) desarrollar una fuerza laboral
más diversificada, 2) reconocer y acomodar el inglés como
segundo idioma al capacitar empleados y 3) proveer medios
para retener y mejorar las habilidades de los trabajadores
en esta industria.
La certificación de ASE es la única credencial independiente
de técnicos automotrices nacionalmente reconocida,
aceptada y respaldada virtualmente por cada segmento
de la industria del servicio automotriz. Adicionalmente,
los dueños de automóviles reconocen y confían en la
certificación de ASE como el símbolo de los talleres de
reparación que cuentan con los mejores estándares de
calidad y servicio.
Considerando el impacto de los técnicos de habla hispana
que trabajan en la industria del servicio automotriz, y
las proyecciones del aumento de técnicos hispanos en
los próximos 10 años, el traducir las preguntas del ASE al
español para mejorar el acceso al desarrollo profesional de
este segmento de la fuerza laboral, está de acuerdo con los
objetivos del Departamento del Trabajo y su iniciativa de
